Inspection | Assessment of Water Distribution Systems

New Technology

Inspection | Assessment of Water Distribution Systems

Can-Explore is proud to partner with Echologics (Mueller) to propose a non-intrusive technology for inspecting water systems. This technology is the first industry solution that is able to assess the structural condition of both water distribution and transmission mains, while simultaneously checking for leaks. Moreover, inspections can be done without having to disrupt the distribution service.

Inspection | Auscultation de réseau d’aqueduc

The technology can be used on water pipe diameters ranging from 100 mm to 1800 mm. However, this range can vary depending on the assessed infrastructure’s characteristics.

Suitable pipe materials:

  • Pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) ;
  • Reinforced concrete ;
  • Ductile cast iron ;
  • Gray cast iron ;
  • Steel ;
  • Asbestos cement.

How the technology works

Inspection | Assessment of Water Distribution Systems

The principle of sound wave velocity in pipes.

New pipe

Inspection aqueduc

Pipe wall is rigid and resists flex when the sound wave passes through.

Sound wave travels faster.

Degraded pipe

Inspection aqueduc

The pipe wall loses rigidity due to flex when the sound wave passes through, making it possible to measure the pipe’s loss of structural thickness.

Sound wave is slowed down by flex in the wall.

Effective
and economical
in winter!

Inspections can even be done successfully in winter.

In addition, you can save money if inspections are done in winter rather than in summer.

Overview and FAQ

  • Support for decisions on infrastructure investments by getting relevant and reliable information for the “action plan for the renewal of drinking water pipes, sewer lines and roads” (Plan d’intervention pour le renouvellement des conduites d’eau potable, d’égouts et des chaussées).

    • Assess the structural condition of water pipes;
    • Set priorities when it comes to future work on the system;
    • Identify the best way to do repairs;
    • Detect the exact location of leaks;
    • Establish a map of the water mains’ structural condition.
  • The technology is already used in several Canadian and American cities.
    Over 5,000 km of water pipes have been assessed with this technology.

Can-Explore

Can-Explore is proud to have been chosen by Echologics (Mueller) to operate the ePulse technology in Québec. Echologics representatives who were responsible for finding a Québec company to partner with determined that Can-Explore was the most advanced in its field when it came to technology. This has led to an agreement between the two companies.

Can-Explore representatives would like to thank Echologics (Mueller) for their trust. This new partnership enables Can-Explore to position itself once again as an industry leader by proposing the most innovative solutions.
